Dr. Michael Ozoemena Mbata, is the Director of the Rural Employment Promotion (REP) Department in the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Headquarters, Abuja. The Rural Employment Promotion is a strategy that uses training to stimulate the interest of all categories of the unemployed people in identifying business opportunities in the agricultural value chain for employment generation and wealth creation.

In carrying out this mandate, the REP Department builds capacity through the training of School leavers, graduates of tertiary institutions, Retirees, people with special needs etc. by assisting them to successfully manage different viable and demand-driven agribusinesses.

Early Life:

Prior to becoming a Director, Dr. Michael Mbata was at various times the head of the Rural Employment Promotion departments in the NDE State offices in Imo and Ebonyi. He also served as the State Co-ordinator of the NDE in Anambra State for six years. Thereafter he was transferred to take charge of the South East Zonal Office of the NDE.

Career Highlights:

Dr. Mbata was one of the very first set of NDE staff trained directly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the 3-phase Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) he holds a Ph.D. degree certificate in Agricultural Economics with specialization in Agricultural Finance. He has the fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Administrators. He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management.

Current Focus:

The Director is working with a team of staff who are young, energetic, committed and with professional knowledge of the Directorate’s mandate for job creation.

Together, we evolve new and pragmatic strategies for training and empowering the youth to start and grow their businesses on a sustainable basis. This is in recognition of the potentials of the agricultural sector with its robust and dynamic value chain in generating employment, reducing poverty and fostering rural economic growth and development.
